The Skeena River and its tributaries Kalum, Copper, and Kitimat offer some of North America's most diverse and productive fly fishing. Steelhead fishing is the heart of the Skeena system and attracts fly fishers from around the world. These fish are known for their strength, explosive runs, and unpredictable behavior. Fishing often involves a two-handed rod, methodically covering large currents and deep pools. When a bite occurs, it is often violent and memorable.

In addition to steelhead, the Skeena also offers some of the best fly fishing for Chinook salmon in the world. Chinook salmon are the river's true powerhouses and require heavy tackle, proper presentation, and experienced guides. During peak season, enormous fish migrate upstream through the system, and every hooked salmon can be a battle that tests both equipment and angler to the limit.

The summer season offers varied fishing with multiple species simultaneously, where the opportunity for a "grand slam" attracts many. Coho, chum, and other salmon species move through the system parallel to steelhead, creating dynamic and intense fishing.

We warmly recommend Skeena River Lodge to anyone who wants to combine first-class fly fishing in Canada with high comfort and personal service. The main building is within comfortable walking distance of the Skeena River and overlooks a private casting pond, perfect for warming up or practicing techniques.

Accommodation is in very nice single rooms or cabins with private bathrooms, providing both privacy and comfort after long days of fishing. The Skeena River and its tributaries are considered one of the world's premier areas for fly fishing for anadromous species. Here you can fish for some of North America's most iconic sport fish in large, flowing rivers and smaller, more technical tributaries.

The most sought-after species is the steelhead, known for its strength, aerial acrobatics, and unpredictable behavior. Steelhead are primarily fished with two-handed rods and are most effectively presented with tube flies and streamers in colors such as black and blue, purple, pink, orange, and natural combinations. Riffling hitch and surface presentations can be very effective under the right conditions, especially in tributaries like the Copper and Kalum River.

Chinook salmon are the world's largest salmon species and are fished during a limited but intense period. Here, larger flies and heavier sinking tips are used to reach the fish near the bottom. Patterns that imitate baitfish and shrimp in colors such as black, blue, purple, and chartreuse work very well. Hooking a Chinook on a fly is one of the most demanding and adrenaline-filled fishing encounters you can experience.

In addition to steelhead and Chinook, the system also holds coho (silver salmon), sockeye, pink salmon, and chum salmon, depending on the season. Coho are aggressive and often take colorful streamers and smaller tube flies with high contrast.

Steelhead are not particularly picky and will take most flies if presented well. However, some color combinations work better than others. Black/blue, pink/orange, and purple are good to have in your fly box. We prefer tube flies over regular flies, but the fish doesn't really care. Long, slender flies work better than large and bulky ones.


NOTE: Hooks must be barbless, and size 1 or 2 is best for steelhead. We crimp the barbs in place before fishing.
The most popular patterns are Bunny Leech, Ken Morrish Trailer Trash, HOBO Spey, Blue Prom Dress, and a small pink leech. Shrimp imitations also work very well. Bring some larger dry flies as an ace up your sleeve for the Copper River.

Passport and visa information – Canada

Swedish citizens do not need a visa for tourist or fishing trips to Canada for up to 6 months. However, an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is required and must be applied for online before departure.
