fish species and bait choice
The Maldives offers a wide variety of fish species such as Giant Trevally, Bluefin Trevally, bonefish and triggerfish. The combination of flats, lagoons and reefs makes the fishing varied and challenging, allowing you to adapt your focus from day to day.
On the flats, you often fish with rod class #7–9 for bonefish and triggerfish with shrimp and crab imitations. Here, it's all about precision and correct presentation.
For Giant Trevally in the surf zone and along the reefs, heavier tackle in rod class #11–12 is used along with larger flies such as poppers and streamers. This is a more intense type of fishing where bites are fast and powerful.
Throughout the trip, John Kärki will be there to help you with fly selection, equipment, and tactics, both during the preparation day and out on the water.
Fly package Maldives GT - 10 is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.

How do you fish in the Maldives?
How do you fish in the Maldives?
Fishing in the Maldives is primarily fly fishing on flats, in lagoons, and along reef edges. On the flats, it often involves sight fishing, where you actively search for fish like bonefish and triggerfish in shallow water. Here, precise presentation and the correct retrieve speed are crucial.
When fishing along reefs and in the surf zone, the focus is often on larger species like Giant Trevally. Larger flies and heavier tackle are used, and the fishing becomes more intense, where quick reactions are essential.
During the fishing trip, the fishing is adapted to the tides, weather, and daily conditions. You will fish with guides and with John Kärki as the tour leader, which means you will constantly receive support in technique, tactics, and how to fish in different situations.
This makes the Maldives a perfect destination for both those who want to learn tropical fly fishing and those who want to further develop their skills in international fishing trips.

For your fishing trip to the Maldives, you will need a valid passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your return date. Also, make sure your passport is in good condition and has at least one blank page.
Swedish citizens receive a tourist visa upon arrival in the Maldives at no extra cost. The visa is usually valid for up to 30 days and requires you to show a return ticket and accommodation confirmation.
Before your trip, you also need to fill out a digital entry form, a so-called Traveller Declaration, before arrival. It is done online and is easy to complete.

What are the weather and climate like?
What are the weather and climate like?
The Maldives has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, making it a perfect destination for fishing trips abroad with a focus on tropical fishing. Temperatures typically range between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius in both the air and water.
The trip in January falls during the drier period, meaning stable weather, less rainfall, and good conditions for fishing. You can expect plenty of sunshine, warm breezes, and pleasant days on the water.
However, the weather in tropical environments is always dynamic. Short rain showers can occur, but they usually pass quickly and rarely affect fishing during the day.
The combination of a warm climate, stable conditions, and good light makes this an excellent period for fly fishing in the Maldives, both for newcomers and those with experience in tropical fishing.
