Join John Kärki and Outside Travels on a hosted trip to the Maldives from April 1–10, 2027. Enjoy six full days of tropical fly fishing on flats, in lagoons, and along reefs with a chance to catch Giant Trevally, bonefish, triggerfish, and bluefin trevally.

John Kärki will accompany the group as a tour leader throughout the week, and before departure, the group will meet in Sweden for a preparation day to review equipment, fly selection, and tactics for the trip.

Host - John Kärki

John Kärki is a passionate fly fisherman with extensive experience in both Nordic and tropical fishing. He has been fishing since childhood and has broad knowledge of species such as sea trout, pike, and other predatory fish.

In his daily life, John works as a fisheries conservation officer in Stockholm and Uppland, where he contributes to developing and preserving our waters and fish stocks. He also shares his knowledge through articles in Svenskt Fiske, as well as through fishing events, lectures, and video productions.

As host on this fishing trip, John will be with you throughout the entire experience, from preparations at home in Sweden to the days out on the water, where he will help you with technique, tactics, and lure selection.

Preparation Day in Sweden

The preparation day in Sweden is an important part of your fishing trip to the Maldives with John Kärki and Outside Travels. It's a successful and appreciated day where last year's fishing group had the opportunity to practice techniques, handle equipment, and prepare for tropical fly fishing.

During the day, we go through the correct fly fishing equipment, including rods, reels, lines, and flies adapted for species such as Giant Trevally, triggerfish, and bonefish. You get to test equipment, ask questions, and receive concrete tips directly from John Kärki, which gives you confidence for the trip.

The preparation day also gives you the opportunity to meet the other participants and build a sense of community even before departure. By being well-prepared, you can focus fully on fishing once you are on the Maldives flats.

The Maldives offers a wide variety of fish species such as Giant Trevally, Bluefin Trevally, bonefish and triggerfish. The combination of flats, lagoons and reefs makes the fishing varied and challenging, allowing you to adapt your focus from day to day.

On the flats, you often fish with rod class #7–9 for bonefish and triggerfish with shrimp and crab imitations. Here, it's all about precision and correct presentation.

For Giant Trevally in the surf zone and along the reefs, heavier tackle in rod class #11–12 is used along with larger flies such as poppers and streamers. This is a more intense type of fishing where bites are fast and powerful.
