Northern Norway offers unique fishing opportunities year-round. During the summer, you can fish in the midnight sun, while autumn offers vibrant nature and calm waters. Regardless of the season, you need the right clothes, equipment, and preparations to succeed with your fishing and fully enjoy the trip.
Fishing gear you mustn't forget for Northern Norway
When fishing in Northern Norway, you need equipment that can handle both heavy fish and rapidly changing weather. The sea fishing here is powerful, especially for halibut, pollock, and cod.
Recommended equipment
Sea fishing rods
- 6–7 feet, 20–30 lbs (cod, pollock, halibut)
Rod for active jig fishing for halibut
- 7–8 feet, casting weight up to 150–200 g (pike or heavier spinning rod works well)
Lighter rod
- 6–8 feet, casting weight 30–50 g (flounder and smaller species)
Reels
- Strong drag, high retrieve ratio, capacity approx. 300 m braided line 0.28–0.40 mm
- Spinning reel 6000–8000 for sea fishing, 2500–4000 for lighter fishing
Lines and leaders
- Braided line 0.28–0.40 mm (preferably multicolour for depth control)
- Leader/shock leader approx. 1 m in 0.90–1.1 mm fluorocarbon or monofilament
Baits and methods
- Soft plastic jigs 200–500 g (halibut, cod, pollock)
- Soft plastic jigs 100–200 g (shallower, active spin fishing)
- Deadbait/bottom fishing (e.g., dead pollock)
- Jigs (cod, pollock)
- Rubber makk (redfish, also pollock)
- Poppers (surface-active pollock)
- Flounder rigs and sabikis (flounder, baitfish)
Practical tools
- Multi-pliers, line cutters, split ring pliers
- Extra braided line
- Measuring tape
- Fillet knife
Clothing and equipment for Northern Norway
- Wool base layers, wool socks
- Beanie, buff
- Fishing gloves with good grip, warmer gloves

- Boots or waterproof hiking boots
